Gebze
With its history dating back to the 7th century B.C., the place of Gebze in ancient times is not known for certain. The importance of Gebze, which is the subject of research, is that the famous Carthaginian commander Hannibal settled in the region during the kingdom period.
The foundation of today's Gebze was with Orhan Gazi. Orhan Gazi, who had a mosque built in his name in Gebze, is the first Turkish elder to leave traces in the region. Until the last years of the Ottoman Empire, Gebze preserved its importance for many years, as a district sometimes connected to Istanbul and more often to Kocaeli.
The district, which is also the subject of Evliya Çelebi's “Seyahatname”, was once used as Kekbeziye, and during his Erzurum Travel it was written that the word Gebze originated from Gelbize.
With Hannibal's Mausoleum, Ballıkayalar Nature Park, Eskihisar Castle and many other works, Gebze is one of the districts frequented by history, nature and adventure lovers.
