It was built by Izmit Kadi El Hac Mustafa bin Mehmet el Gümüşzade on the ruins of the Justinian Palace from the Byzantine Period. The mosque takes its characteristic feature from the hedgehog minaret and tile decorations. The mosque, which was heavily damaged in the 1999 earthquake, was rebuilt in 2005 in accordance with its original form and made ready for worship.
