Hungarian King Tökeli İmre, who took refuge in the Ottoman Empire in 1702, lived in the Kartepe district with his wife Ilona Zrinyi until 1705. There is a monument to the couple in Karatepe Village. One of the guesthouses located in the İzmit SEKA Paper Factory area has been transformed into the Tökeli İmre Memorial House. These two structures continue to take place in Kocaeli as symbols of the friendship between Turkey and Hungary.
